moreGoogle’s Big Changes to UK and EU Brand Rules
Google announced today the two fundamental changes to their bidding rules which will likely result in increased costs to brand owners using paid search. First, they will be applying new rules for brand bidding in EU countries which will be more in line with the current UK rules. At the same time, they will be changing brand-bidding rules in the UK to align them with those of the US. Both of these changes are anticipated for September 14th.

The article came on the back of comments from senior marketers at eBay including Phillip Rinn, director of advertising partnerships, who said British consumers weren’t ready for social commerce and that eBay were ‘instead testing ways in which social media more broadly could fit into a transactional website.’ Alex Marks, eBay’s head of international business marketing, added that ‘although social media is important for retailers, it doesn’t need to be a separate focus.’
IMRG’s David Smith said many retailers ‘feel they could get a better return on investment from other channels’, and are therefore only using social media for reputation management purposes, which seemed to back up eBay’s view that if the market is not ready brands were going to focus attentions elsewhere
